Before Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the 1530's, religious houses were major landowners. It's hard to imagine just how they would have looked to our ancestors, but so many amazing ruins remain that we can still be dazzled by their grace and stature.
Not all abbeys and priories were ruined. Many were converted by their new secular owners into family homes.
